BISHOP NOLL SPEECH TEAM
The Bishop Noll Speech team was revived in October of 2015, after laying dormant for some time. The Bishop Noll Speech team is a charter member of the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA), and the Indiana High School Forensics Association (IHSFA). Many speakers are also part of the National Speech and Debate Honor Society.
The Bishop Noll Speech team is a varsity academic team. Speakers receive varsity letters after competing and placing in at least five varsity tournaments. Speakers have a chance to qualify for state at the sectional tournament, and for nationals at the district tournament. Members of Bishop Noll Speech have qualified for the state tournament each year since October 2015.
Speech competition is divided into two broad categories: interpretive and public speaking.
Interpretive, or “Interp”, events are of particular interest to those students with a background, or interest, in acting and performance. These include:
Humorous Interpretation is a memorized, 10-minute humorous acting performance (the point is to make the audience laugh) cutting a version of a play, musical, movie, TV show, novel, story, or novel. Most speakers do cuttings of popular plays or musicals. Performers will perform 5-7 characters in the piece.
Dramatic Interpretation is a memorized, 10-minute dramatic acting performance (the point is to make the audience have an emotional reaction) cutting a version of a play, musical, movie, TV show, novel, story, or novel. Most speakers do cuttings of popular memoirs. Performers will perform 1-3 characters in the piece.
Duo Interpretation is basically humorous or dramatic interpretation (above), but two speakers perform the piece.
Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and Program of Oral Interpretation are all 10-minute pieces that are read from a hand-held binder. Prose is a short story, novel, or non-fiction piece. Poetry is performing 3 - 5 poems. Program of Oral Interpretation is performing one prose piece, one poetry piece, and one play piece all in one program.
Original Performance is a 10-minute piece that the student writes him or herself and performs.
The speech season begins in late October and runs through mid-March. The team competes at 8 - 12 tournaments during the regular season.
The speech team is looking for students of all abilities. Mr. Burgun always says, “If you want to be on the team, there are 14 events, I’ll find an event in which you can be successful.”
Callouts are held in early September, but the team accepts speakers throughout the season. Please note that the sectional team is decided based not only on the performance of the piece, but the number of regular season tournaments attended.
If a student is interested in learning more about the speech team, see Mr. Burgun in room 311.
